Away from High Risk Locations

Newcastle is located almost 300 miles from London, arguably the highest risk location in Europe. Newcastle and Middlesbrough are very low risk cities. They have few buildings and districts that would be of any interest to would-be terrorists. The business districts are spread across the city and would be hard to cause any major disruption.

Excellent Transport links

The North East, despite being surrounded by moors on three sides and sea on the other, has excellent transport links. It is served by 2 major airports offering fast, cost effective travel to London and the South East. It has a major train hub located 30 miles away in Darlington, so Newcastle is accessible from just about anywhere in the UK by rail. The road network is well established with motorways linking it to Scotland and the South.

Massive Communications Infrastructure

It also offers excellent communication infrastructure second only to that of London. There is massive spare capacity in Newcastle's network, with all major telecom providers physically located in the city. There are plans to install an enormous link from the UK to rest of Europe, at Redcar in Teesside (approx. 40 miles from Newcastle). This link will offer resilience to the UK Internet in the event of major disaster in London and provide a second peering point other than the LINX in London.
